The Appleton Ladies’ Potato Race is a contemporary Australian comedy set in the fictional country town of Appleton, inspired by real events. The play centres on Penny, who returns home in time for the town’s annual Potato Race and challenges the long-accepted rule that women compete for a smaller prize than the men.
What begins as a simple question of fairness exposes deeper tensions within the community. As the women of Appleton respond in different and often unexpected ways, the town is forced to confront its assumptions about tradition, gender, power and whose voices are heard.
